January in Senior Classes

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful break and are gearing up for Term 2!

Here are some of the activities I have planned for my class in Term 2.

English

I am focusing on the report writing genre this month, I hope to use a variety of resources from Prim-Ed and PDST to support my lessons. I am also going to use the children’s magazine Primary Planet to compare reports and help the children to plan their own report writing.

I have also been working on the children’s fluency and found some fluency passages on teachers pay teachers that I hope to use with my class. Focusing on one passage a week and encouraging the parents to monitor their child’s fluency at home too. So far my plan is to send home two copies of the text, one for the child and one for the parents to mark. The parent can listen to their child reading and record errors on Monday night. From Tuesday to Thursday the child must read the text for 1 minute and the parent can record how much of the text they read along with any errors. Hopefully both myself and the parents will see progress over the course of the week. I am going to try this approach for January and will update our progress as we go.

Gaeilge

I am continuing to use Irishhomework.ie with my class this term. I want to focus more on the oral language and drama aspects, as I felt I was not consistent in December. I continue to use Beal Beo as my text in class and while the comprehension activities are difficult at times, the children’s vocabulary is constantly improving.

Maths

I want to focus on problem solving skills along with critical thinking skills in Maths this term. I am hoping to give one session in the week for specific problem solving skills using a variety of resources such as I See Problem Solving and I See Reasoning from Gareth Metcalfe. I also purchased new books from Prim Ed to develop their algebraic thinking for Secondary School.

Projects and SESE

I have tried to integrate my SESE and project work this term. I have applied to the Science Blast in the RDS in March and we will be exhibiting our project on the Wednesday. It is a big undertaking this year, and I am a little anxious about it, but I hope the class will enjoy the research and experiments so we can exhibit our best work on the day. This is a work in progress so Watch this Space!!

I hope you all enjoy the rest of the Christmas holidays!

Time to go finish off the selection box before my new years resolutions kick in next week!

If you have any questions please send me a PM.

A.M.

  1. Hi there, happy new year! Just wondering what reading fluency pack you purchased for the senior classes? I’ve been looking for something similar for a while now. Kind regards, Éabha.
